Iveth Aguilar, City Arts & Tech
College: University of California, Merced
Iveth is City Arts & Technology High School’s 2017 winner of the Jackie Robinson Scholarship Award.
Iveth was born in El Salvador, and raised by her mother, auntie and uncle. When she was 5 years old, her mother left El Salvador and moved to the United States in search of a new home and a better life for her family. Two years later, Iveth and her four-year-old sister traveled to America with the help of a guide, to reunite with their mother and begin a new life. They faced many challenges, such as learning a new language and assimilating into a new culture.
Iveth met these challenges with determination and grace. She has become a successful scholar today because she understood from a young age just how much higher education means to her mom, and to her whole family. In her College Success Portfolio, Iveth described her Philosophy of Education like this, “Education isn’t just about learning to remember the lessons taught in a classroom, it’s about what sticks to you after you’ve finished your classes. It’s what you learn to use in the real world.” She will take that philosophy with her this fall to the University of California, Merced, to study Computer Science.
