Envision’s Hayward High School Wins $15,000 in Technology Funding and Home Internet Access Through Khan Academy’s LearnStorm
Impact Academy of Arts and Technology is thrilled to announce that Impact students have unlocked technology funding and home internet access for eligible families through their participation in LearnStorm! Their achievement will be celebrated at Impact Academy, 2560 Darwin Street in Hayward, on April 30th at 9:00am, with a visit to the school by Khan Academy and Google. Googlers will present a certificate to Impact students and talk about the difference math achievement has made in their lives.
LearnStorm 2015 is a free, 3-month learning challenge designed to build a student’s ability to learn anything through mastery of math skills on Khan Academy. Points are earned by mastering math skills and for taking on challenging new concepts and persevering.
Under the leadership of Denise Huey, Impact’s 9th grade Algebra teacher, and with support from Impact’s amazing digital media and math departments (Omar Bryan, Lindsey Dodge, Rosa Lee, Dave Carter, Marjorie Jackson, and Keesha Trenerry) Impact Academy students achieved LearnStorm benchmarks, qualifying the school for $15,000 in technology funding from Google.org through DonorsChoose.org. Impact will use this funding to purchase 42 new Chromebook laptops. Now, every single math class at Impact will have a dedicated set of computers for students to engage in more personalized mathematical skill building.
In addition, achieving these benchmarks qualifies the school for an exciting reward from Comcast, who will offer 6 months of complimentary home Internet service to every eligible Impact Academy family, through the Internet Essentials program.
WHY THIS MATTERS TO OUR STUDENTS AND OUR SCHOOL:
The mission of Impact Academy of Arts & Technology (IA) is to transform the lives of students – especially those who are first in their families to attend college – by preparing them for success in college and in life. 72% of our students are from low-income families; over 70% are students of color. IA helps students change the trajectory of their lives by helping them get to and succeed in college. The LearnStorm accessibility prizes – the Chromebook laptops and the home-based internet access – are critical tools in that effort, leveling the playing field for and opening opportunities to our students.
