Emily Mejia, City Arts & Tech High School (CAT)
College: Mills College
Emily is City Arts & Tech’s 2019 winner of the Jackie Robinson Scholarship Award.
CAT’s recipient of this year’s Jackie Robinson Award is known for being the “first.” Emily will be the first in her family to attend a 4 year college, first in her family to pursue a career in nursing, first in her class to earn principal’s distinction for her College Success Portfolio Defense, and always the first in her class to turn in completed work. Being the first does not come easy for this scholar, but she has steadfastly persevered through her challenges and made sure to put forth her maximum effort in everything she tries. Emily wore multiple hats this year as a student leader, exemplary scholar, devoted friend, extra parent to her younger siblings, and intern during Workplace Learning Experience. Despite all the obstacles and additional roles, she carried on and excelled in her journey because she truly values her education. Next year she will be attending Mills College for a degree in nursing. Congratulations to Emily Mejia, this year’s Jackie Robinson Award. We are so excited and thrilled for the new firsts that she will encounter in the future.
